Eldar Elf Reflects on Mortality
I have long looked up to L úthien Tinúviel , the daughter of the Sindarin Elf King Thingol and goddess-like Melian. She represents for us Eldar the power of our race as an immortal princess of Doriath . She is even known as the most beautiful of all the children of Ilúvatar . However, I fear her love for a MAN, not an elf, has led her down a dark path towards death. This mortal man is named Beren Erchamion and she was prepared to risk her own life for him! Following Beren’s death, Lúthien sang a song of such grief in the Ha l ls of Mandos (the p lace of the dead) that she was given two choices: to dwell in Val inor forever without Beren or to return to Middle-Earth with him, but they would both be mortal . She chose to become mortal and share Beren’s fate. T hrough her choice, the kindreds of Elves and Men were joined. Death is an ending none of us elves truly know. And for this, I feel a lump in my throat and a deep sorrow...
