Eldar Elf Reflects on Mortality
I have long looked up to Lúthien Tinúviel, the daughter of the Sindarin Elf King Thingol and goddess-like Melian. She represents for us Eldar the power of our race as an immortal princess of Doriath. She is even known as the most beautiful of all the children of Ilúvatar. However, I fear her love for a MAN, not an elf, has led her down a dark path towards death. This mortal man is named Beren Erchamion and she was prepared to risk her own life for him! Following Beren’s death, Lúthien sang a song of such grief in the Halls of Mandos (the place of the dead) that she was given two choices: to dwell in Valinor forever without Beren or to return to Middle-Earth with him, but they would both be mortal. She chose to become mortal and share Beren’s fate. Through her choice, the kindreds of Elves and Men were joined.
Death is an ending none of us elves truly know. And for this, I feel a lump in my throat and a deep sorrow in my heart. I don’t even want to think about the pain that Lúthien will endure. Now, she has set a precedent for the intermarriage of an elf and a man. Unfortunately, this could be the start of elven lives inflicted with mortality due to the mingling of elves and mortal men. I fear this choice will have harsh consequences for my race, such as loosing immortality, all from Lúthien’s love of a man. What we once thought was eternal in her is no longer.
But I have not lost hope, and I am more confident than ever in Lúthien’s strength. The decision to live mortally instead of remaining immortal is a true testament of her brave character and her willingness to sacrifice. She is not like any other elf. She shows us all that hope and love exist despite Morgoth’s evil. The futures for us Eldar Elves are uncertain, but Lúthien’s courage will guide us like a star shining through the darkness.
